Class: III ; Flow: 150-500 cfs; Average Gradient: 7 m/km; Portages: not likely; Length: 16 km; Time: 2 hours
Season: June to December; rafts? no; Highlights: something not so hard; Crux move: catching the water
Put-In: Esquipulas del Norte (315 m); Take-Out: Los Encuentros (Río Mame, 200 m)
Description: (click here for general notes about my descriptions)
The Río Esquipulas offers a less advanced creeking run, not so common in these parts. You may not have driven all the way out here for it, but if you catch the water while passing through, give it whirl. Udo reports that it is class II/III.
A full description is in the Mayan Whitewater El Salvador, Honduras, & Nicaragua guidebook.
Descent History: Udo Witteman is the only person I know to have run it, back in the 90s. Flow Notes: This run needs heavy rains to go. The Mame gauge can give a hint to levels, when it works (history graph shown here for reference).
